Homeless Man in Library

Everyone knows that the University of Florida is a public school, meaning that anyone can be on campus or using its resources; even if what they’re doing is completely random. However, do we really expect to see homeless people in Library West? It feels like finals week with the stress I have from two of my classes and I’m going on my second all-nighter. I walk into the library, and make an immediate right to get my venti Skinny Vanilla Latte with low-fat whipped cream (the best drink to study with because of the wonderful taste yet low calories). I take the stairs to the 3rd floor to meet up with some friends from class and set up my laptop and books. We’re all talking and studying and then we hear a weird moaning noise coming from the computers, but then it goes away instantly. Slightly delirious from all the coffee and lack of sleep, I have to look at what is going on. I see a homeless man, in his sixties, watching porn on the library computers!!!

My mouth literally dropped open and I just stared because I honestly didn’t know how to react; was there really a homeless man watching porn in Library West? Where are the people that walk and monitor who uses the computers and what they’re doing? Shouldn’t there be a firewall or limited access to sites like those unless needed for research papers? (Obviously he wasn’t there to do research). All of these questions were flooding my head and I had no idea what to think. It didn’t help that one my best guy friends was there and he just started cracking up! But thankfully he came to his senses and went and told the assistant working at the computer; the man was escorted out of the building.

This entire incident completely ruined my train of thought for studying, that’s for sure. I truly believe that anyone should be able to use the library no matter who they are, even if it’s a homeless man that just wants to sit in a comfortable chair and keep warm. The thing that bothered me the most about this was being able to watch porn in the library. That’s completely disturbing and rude for any person studying to see or hear. We are all adults who are using these computers, even though many students don’t act like it. We shouldn’t have to have firewalls and security walking around monitoring our actions, especially if it’s for a project. But when it comes to watching any type of nudity or pornography, there really should be a block in the computer system. If the student or outside party can show proof that it’s for studies they can have the block lifted by inserting a password or some key they can get at the desk. Even though it will always be awkwardly uncomfortable for anyone to see this, having an actual reason might make the others feel at ease. The best conclusion our student government and libraries could come to would be to have a small computer lab for students conducting this research to go to; away from the common public just working on calculus homework.

I wish I could say that I don’t feel like I would have seen this from a UF student, they can do that on their personal time; however, there’s many accounts of students masturbating in weird public places. The homeless man obviously had no other access to it, so this was the best place for him, but that’s not an excuse. Firewalls should be put up so pornography and nudity couldn’t be available on public computers, unless for research purposes.

  1. I completely agree that is so disgusting! I cannot believe that that was allowed to go on at the library. I however do not feel that anyone should be allowed into campus buildings. We as students of the University are paying for these facilities therefore I believe you should have to be a student or part of the faculty to use these services like the computer labs in the library or other places. I believe the farthest non UF students should be allowed to go is on campus but not inside the buildings.

  2. Where did you get the image for this post?

Is it possible that this person was doing research? Possibly research into how far we can go to ignore him; perhaps, he was timing how long it would take for anyone to notice and say something to him.

Part of what makes “university life” so isolating for me is that it can so easily be closed off from the world around it.

  3. This has happened to me before! I am sitting at the library trying to study for a final and right behind me is a homeless man watching porn. Maybe it was the same guy? Anyway, I definitely agree with you in that there should be better ways for monitoring this behavior and blocking those sites. Its gross and distracting and it makes it even worse that I’m trying to concentrate on stsudying.

  4. That is awful. It is appalling that someone would engage in such behavior at a university library. I would be very disturbed, as you were, if I saw such a thing. Im glad you had your friend tell the authorities so that he could be escorted out. Personally, I have never seen something like this while being in a building on campus. However, I have read in the Alligator several time about things such as this occurring. For example, older men participating sexual acts while observing female students. It is all very disturbing and I hope actions are being taken to prevent such behavior.

  5. This is really really disturbing. It’s also very scary to think that this can happen to us in our own library. Something should be done to help protect the students. Its crazy to think that someone can just walk on to campus and use the computers. I have never encountered an experience like this but I’ve seen very ‘suspicious looking ‘characters. In these times I think the university should really take the precaution and implement stricter security measures.

  6. I agree to a certain extent with Claire’s take on the matter- that as UF students paying for these fuctioning facilities, there should be some form of protection from outsiders using the very resources that we need and have open access to.
On the other hand, college is a place where you know that you may very well experience, witness and become involved in things that you were previously sheltered from. And I think that opening up your mind(not you specifically, but any student) to unordinary events and people, and LEARNING from that experience offers you something as a person that you can’t really put a price on.

  7. Well said. I have blogged about this and a related post at “Twin Students of Different Mothers Want Internet Filters” at http://safelibraries.blogspot.com/2010/02/twin-students-of-different-mothers-want.html

    Thanks.

  8. This is not the first time I have heard about something like this happening at the library. There have been signs next to elevators before about if you see this man report to the front desk. It really is quite disturbing and annoying that until something happens nothing can really be done. Now we are all on the lookout for this one homeless guy but what about the next one. It is unfortunate that when they do get into a warm area and are able to use a computer that this is what they spend their time on. I truly feel bad for the homeless and if they are not bothering anyone then by all means sit on a chair and relax but looking at porn at the library, whether homeless or not, is just gross.

  9. I must say, seeing something like that would have ruined my ability to study too. This is a great post by the way. I can hardly believe that he thought he would have been able to get away with that in such a public place. How did he even get on the computer without a Gatorlink ID? I just think that the whole ordeal was gross. I
